Maple Leafs announce 2010 rookie tournament schedule

The Toronto Maple Leafs, the John Labatt Centre and Tourism London announced Monday the schedule for the 2010 Rookie Tournament. This year, the Maple Leafs prospects will compete in three games beginning Saturday, September 11 versus rookie teams from the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks at John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario.

The 2010 Rookie Tournament tickets go on sale Friday, July 30 at 10 am. Tickets can be purchased at the John Labatt Centre Box Office, by phone at (866) 455-2849 or online at www.johnlabattcentre.com.  Ticket prices for the evening games are Adults -$19.25 and Students/Seniors/Kids - $14.25.  Ticket prices for the afternoon games are Adults - $16.75 and Students/Seniors/Kids - $11.75.

Scheduled to attend the rookie tournament for the Maple Leafs is forward Nazem Kadri, who was Toronto’s first choice, selected seventh overall, at the 2009 Entry Draft. Kadri registered 93 points (35 goals, 58 assists) in 56 games last season for the London Knights. Other notables on the Leafs projected rookie tournament roster include defenceman Jesse Blacker, Keith Aulie and Simon Gysbers, and newly signed goaltenders Jussi Rynnas and Ben Scrivens.

In addition, forwards Brayden Irwin, Marcel Mueller, Jamie Devane, and Ken Ryan, as well as 2010 draft picks Brad Ross (43rd overall), Greg McKegg (62nd overall), Sam Carrick (144th overall) and Josh Nicholls (182nd overall) are expected to bolster the attack of Toronto’s entry in the tournament. A full official roster will be released at a later date.

Indo-Ontario Cup 2010 Ball Hockey Championship

The inaugural Indo-Ontario Cup 2010 Ball Hockey Championship stage has been set in Brampton. The tournament will be held at South Fletchers Sportsplex, 500 Ray Lawson Blvd. It will take place over the weekend of Friday August 6, 2010, Saturday August 7, 2010, and Sunday August 8, 2010. Come joins us for our opening ceremonies on Friday August 6, 2010 at 6:30 PM. Open ceremonies will consist of ribbon cutting ceremony and a ceremonial ball drop. A host of dignitaries will be present for the ceremonies

The tournament will be composed of two levels of competition. At present we have 9 teams confirmed for the tournament. Five teams will compose the Pool A division and 4 teams for the Pool B Division. We are still looking for players and teams to participate in the tourney. As well, we are still looking for support from our local businesses for sponsorship of the tournament.

The objective of the tournament is to promote and develop the sport of ball hockey in the Indo-Canadian community in Ontario. The Indo-Ontario Cup would serve to develop the game of ball hockey with the youth and up-and-coming teams in Ontario. The Indo-Ontario Cup would expose the teams of Ontario to the Indo-Canada Cup and to the World Championships of ball hockey, both events are held every other year, so every two years. It would provide local athletes with the opportunity to be scouted for both Team India and Team Canada.

Toronto Maple Leafs sign Mike Zigomanis, Joey Crabb and Danny Richmond

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that the team has signed unrestricted free agent forwards Mike Zigomanis and Joey Crabb, and defenceman Danny Richmond.

“These players add significant depth to our organization,” said Dave Poulin, vice president of hockey operations. “They all have experience at the NHL level and will provide strong leadership for our young prospects.”

Zigomanis, 29, recorded 13 assists and a plus-five (+5) rating in seven games with the Toronto Marlies in 2009-10. The Toronto, Ontario native registered a six-game point streak from October 20 to November 6. The 6-0, 200-pound forward also skated in 27 games last season with Djurgardens (SEL), recording four goals and seven assists. Zigomanis has appeared in 189 career NHL games with Carolina, St. Louis, Phoenix and Pittsburgh, collecting 39 points (21 goals, 18 assists) and 85 penalty minutes.

Crabb, 27, registered 24 goals and 29 assists in 79 games with the Chicago Wolves in 2009-10. The Anchorage, Alaska native also posted 11 points (six goals, five assists) in 14 playoff games last season. The 6-1, 190-pound forward has appeared in 29 career NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers, posting four goals and five assists.

Richmond, 25, skated in 69 AHL games last season with the Peoria Rivermen and Rockford IceHogs, notching one goal and 21 assists to go along with 166 penalty minutes. The 6-0, 194-pound defenceman has appeared in 49 career NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes and Chicago Blackhawks. Richmond was a member of the gold medal winning Team USA at the 2004 World Jr. Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

Toronto Maple Leafs add Marcel Mueller to the roster

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday that the club has agreed to terms on a two-year entry level contract with free agent forward Marcel Mueller.
 
Mueller, 22, appeared in 53 games with the Cologne Sharks of the German Elite League (DEL) in 2009-10, registering the team-lead in game-winning goals (6), power-play goals (8), assists (32) and penalty minutes (122), while finishing second in goals (24), shorthanded goals (4) and points (56). In 198 games in the German Elite League with the Sharks and Berlin Polar Bears from 2005-06 to 2009-10, the 6-3, 220-pound winger recorded 43 goals and 61 assists for 104 points with 316 penalty minutes.
 
Mueller, a native of Berlin, Germany, represented his country at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver where he played four games and registered two assists and 12 penalty minutes. He also participated in the 2010 World Championships in Cologne, collecting one goal and one assist for two points. Over his career he has played for Germany at numerous international championships, including the World Junior Championships in 2007.

Brett Lebda signs with Toronto Maple Leafs

Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday evening that the team has signed unrestricted free agent defenceman Brett Lebda to a two year contract.
 
Lebda, 28, appeared in 62 playoff games for the Detroit Red Wings over the past five postseasons. He dressed for 19 and 23 playoff games in 2008 and 2009, respectively, as the Red Wings advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in both seasons. During Detroit’s successful run to the Stanley Cup Championship in 2008, Lebda played in 19 playoff games and averaged 12:33 of ice time.

Lebda scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game on October 5, 2005 versus Patrick Lalime of the St. Louis Blues.

The Buffalo Grove, Illinois native enjoyed a standout career at the University of Notre Dame from 2000 to 2004. During that time, he made the CCHA All-Rookie Team (2001) and the CCHA Second All-Star Team (2004). In 152 games with the Fighting Irish, Lebda scored 26 goals and added 59 assists for 85 points.

Undrafted, Lebda originally signed as a free agent with Detroit on July 21, 2004.
